Greetings Riders and Welcome New Members!! Summer 2010
As I mentioned in my last newsletter, we are moving forward with raising our funds to donate to the Light and Life Food Pantry managed out of the Free Methodist Church in Avon. Assisting only Hendricks County Families in need with food, toiletries and personal hygiene items. We are working to raise funds through our annual 'Directors Run' fund raising drive as well as our next ALR Dinner Night on Friday, August 6th. I am happy to report that Bob Mullins has acquired 2 sponsors for our Thunder on the Rail event with Mainscape Landscaping and MoonDog Home Repair. Thanks Bobby! The money raised will be added to at least match the 3rd Annual 'Thunder on the Rail' poker run proceeds which will be Saturday, August 21st. This is now less than a month away!! We are also collecting any items that can be used as door prize or raffle/auction items. Get with Donna Williams or myself if you have any suggestions.
Now to back up a bit... Our Lunch Run on July 10th was a fun and relaxing day which we brought along nearly 50 bikes amongst a half-dozen chapters to Moonshine, IL. The day ended with full bellies (Moon Burgers), nice scenery and about 240 miles less tread on the tires. If you missed out, we will be having another lunch run on August 7th to Crawfordsville and we will crash Stoney's Bar along the way. We had our monthly ALR Dinner on July 14th which we not only raised funds for Susie's Place, but were able to welcome a few of their constituents as new members to our post and our riders chapter. Thank You Steve Barnhardt for preparing a fantastic garlic baked chicken meal along with the fixins. I heard nothing but compliments to the chef!
We endured a productive July membership meeting without any 'non-business related' and 'non-good of the order' interruption and have made a few upgrades to our program. We rallied to donate $50 to Speedways signature event this year, the Zachary Nordmeyer Memorial Ride on July 31st to become a sponsor along with only a few chapters. I also presented the privilege of being the sole proprietor (Avon ALR) of the Legacy Run Flag that is presented to the National Commander at the end of the Legacy Run (in which the flag is carried across the country) and then at the National Convention. I started this last year and every year going forward it will be requested by national. At a minimal $180 cost, this will be our annual minimum donation to the Legacy Run which will proudly display that Avon, Indiana Post 145 plays an important part in this nationally recognized event. Also, during the 'good of the order' section (which was the whole meeting), Steve Barnhardt once again stepped up and volunteered to cook our next meal on Friday, August 6th which will be meatloaf and the gang! Nate Schauwecker who works funeral services will provide limited but sufficient support to the Avon Boy Scouts and their ambition to learn flag etiquette and Bruce Curry, who won a very large basket 'O Harley Davidson Goodies at one of our post raffles; donated that very same very large basket 'O Harley Davidson Goodies to our Thunder on the Rail benefit to use as the door prizes and raffle/auction! Thank You Bruce! for not having a Harley Davidson.
Finally in the meeting, an update to the Rider of the Year program which those who continually add value to our commitment as American Legion Riders of Avon, Post 145 and what we stand for in our community are recognized. A big hand for Donna Williams leading and Terri McFarland a decimal point off with Cowboy and myself on their heels. Little things like attending all 6 of the ALR events and working 5 of them are the kinds of things where recognition is due along with attending any or one of the meetings (chapter, district and state), recruiting new members which we thank Bob Mullins for Brent Leichty, Bill Clark for Steve Barnhardt and Sean Harshey for Sara. Even attending another ALR benefit ride will get you noticed in our organization as someone who stands out as an American Legion Rider worth recognizing.
2011 Membership renewals are being accepted and also count towards credit in the Rider of the Year program if paid before Labor Day (Monday, September 6th). For those that newly joined near the end of June or later, your membership was established as an 2011 membership already.
At end I'll say, the ALR Dinner in September is up for grabs if anyone would like to step up and volunteer; it also happens to be the Friday of Labor Day Weekend and the first Friday of every month going forward. Maybe we'll see you at our next membership meeting on August 18th where you can be a part of shaping our chapters future.
Hope to see you around the Post, Ride Safe!
